Exciting news

At last – some exciting news about the electricity! After a frustrating series of phone calls and emails (the left hand not knowing what the right hand was doing, and even sometimes the left hand not knowing what it was doing…), I finally now have a new supply number! Not exactly exciting in itself, but it is at least stage one done, and I even now have a (tentative) date for installation of a 3 phase meter!!

Once the meter is in place, I can at last test that the oven works (gulp!), and have a few days of test baking to try to get to grips with it. It’s going to take some getting used to, moving from a domestic oven to a commercial deck oven…

Next piece of exciting news is that I will be stocking a limited selection of rather fantastic Cooking Gorgeous products. A Linton-based company run by the lovely Henny and Anton, they produce a range of gorgeous aprons, tea-towels and other “delicious kitchen goodies” – all made in England. It sounds wrong if I say that I wouldn’t wear anything else when I bake, but you know what I mean 😉

Finally, I have decided that I will (I hope!) have room for an espresso machine in the shop, so real coffee to take-away is coming to Linton soon to join the Real Bread! The machine should be delivered tomorrow, so I should be in a position to start next week.

Well that was rather fun! Day one of the shop went very well. Was (just about) ready on time, had people queuing out of the door (admittedly it’s a small shop, but even so), lots of familiar faces (friends and existing customers) and some new ones, and a sell out – what a fab start! Someone even brought in a bottle of Champagne to open, which was a really rather lovely thought – thanks Paul! 😉

People were so keen to get in that I didn’t even have time to get any photos of the shop before customers started buying! Here are some from when I got the chance:-

Must dash – I’ve got to open again in an hour…

Jigsaw Bakery shop – opening day

So, opening day is here! Very exciting, but a little nerve-wracking too…

A few more bits to bake, then it will be time to load up the van, and take it all to the shop. It will (hopefully) all be much easier when I can bake there too.

In addition to the bread etc made by me, I will also be selling fantastic organic flour from the windmill at Swaffham Prior, coffee from London roasters Coffee Plant (very tasty, and organic and Fairtrade) and other local produce (jam, chutney, mincemeat etc), as well as Friday afternoon goodies from Nick!

Here are some photos from last night – all it needs now is some bread!

I’d better get a move on if I’m going to be open at 3 o’clock 😉

Jigsaw Bakery Shop – Week 4

Now the clocks have changed, and it’s getting colder, I’m getting even more eager to get the shop up and running! I am now thinking that I will go for a 2 stage opening.

I am still waiting for news on the 3-phase  electricity supply, so I don’t think I can wait until the oven is up and running before starting to use the shop. It’s looking likely that at some point next week I am going to continue to bake at home in the morning, but take the breads over to the shop to sell in the afternoon. Not perfect, but hey ho!

I finally plucked up courage to spray-paint the top panel of the oven where it was showing some signs of wear and tear (of course, it would have been easier if the new cupboards and solid oak counter weren’t in place, and the walls hadn’t already been painted…)! I am rather pleased with how it has come up – it now looks much tidier. Although I bought the oven as ‘fully working’ I still haven’t seen it in operation – fingers very much crossed!

Jigsaw Bakery: Week 3 – part 2

A busy week so far – 2 trips to Ikea (one is just never enough is it?), 2 days working on the shop with Darren, oh and some baking!

The counter is looking lovely (really, really lovely IMHO)- just a sand down and oiling, then that will be finished. The new fridge was delivered yesterday – it would have been slightly easier if the units and counter had been fixed after the the fridge was moved in…

Can’t wait to get in – if nothing else, it’s getting ffffreezing standing outside selling bread! And dark…

Week 3 – part 1

A fun day at the shop with Darren on Monday. Lots of visible change (and some more shopping!), rather than background stuff like plumbing and electrics (obviously rather important, but not exactly fun and exciting!)

The layout is really starting to take shape now, with cupboards for the counter put together and put in place. We went to pick up the (rather lovely, and rather heavy!) solid oak butcher’s block counter-top – very exciting to see it in!

Week 2

Into week 2 and we have some good progress!

Here is how it looked when I moved in:

We (well, when I say we, I mean Darren from The Property Squad, with some hinderance help from me at times…) have removed the old counter, put up some walls and some cupboards, and installed sinks and plumbing (in the shop and the cellar), and sorted out various other bits and pieces. I spent yesterday painting the shop with my Dad (a roller or brush would have been easier – boom boom…) – Dulux ‘Snowman’ on the walls in case you were wondering (haven’t decided on the colour for the woodwork yet).

Some work in progress pictures (from before we painted):

The cellar has had a good clear out and clean up, and is looking much better now – it is actually going to be  a much more useful space than I had initially thought, which is good because space in the shop is going to be rather tight!

I collected the mahooosive oven from London on Sunday – by heck, it sure is heavy (and slightly bigger that the approximate dimensions I had been given…). Thanks to Darren, Dan and my Dad for helping! It needs a bit of TLC (my Mum couldn’t wait to stuck into giving it a good initial clean), but I’m sure that it will be looking lovely soon!

Insurance is sorted, phoneline and broadband are on order, and I have registered the shop as food premises with the council. The electricity is still proving to be a PITA though – I found out from EDF on Monday that it’s likely to be an extra 10 working days on top of what I was expecting, meaning a three-phase supply may not be available until the middle/end of November  😦

OK, time to buy some more things from the ever expanding shopping list – what fun!! 😉

Week 1, day 1…

So, here we are – day 1 of work on the new bakery! Very, very exciting. Starting off with a clear-up and clean out, then taking down some things, and putting up some different things…

I need to get 3-phase electricity sorted for the shop (for the bread oven I am picking up soon), and up until this week, the people at the energy company haven’t really been overly helpful – so I was rather pleased to speak to someone on Monday who actually seemed to want to help. I have her contact details, so will stick with dealing with her where possible!

Right – coffee is finished, I had better crack on…
